Halloween Is Coming

Halloween is coming,
I like it the most.
I'll be a goblin,
You can be a ghost.
When we get all dressed up, we will say,
"Boo!  It's trick or treat today!

Jolly Pumpkin

Jolly pumpkin round and fat
On a barnyard fence he sat.
A cold strong wind blew throough the sky,
Uh-oh, SPLAT
Pumpkin Pie!

Halloween Safety

It's important to teach students safety rules before they go out to trick or treat. For several years I have done this with limericks that I took from an old Carson-Dellosa resource book, Halloween Happenings.

Read these poems to your students and have them illustrate the verses and discuss the safety rule in each one.

A greedy young goblin named Pete
Ate candy as he roamed the street.
At first just his tummy
Began to feel crummy...
He really got tricked by his treat!

MORAL: Eat treats at home after an adult checks them and don't eat too much!

One fellow dressed up in disguise
Felt his mask slip over his eyes.
He tripped on a rock,
Got a hole in his sock,
And spilled all his candy... Surprise!

MORAL: Make-up is safer than a mask, because you can see better.  If you do use a mask, pull it up while walking, and slip it back on your face while standing still.

One young trick-or-treater fell back.
She didn't keep up with the pack.
We stayed close on the streets,
And were all given treats.
She was lost and we wanted her back.

MORAL: Travel with a group of friends only on well-lit sidewalks in familiar neighborhoods. Be sure you have your address and telephone number with you, in case you need to call home. (If you have a cell phone, take it with you).

Jack-o'-lantern, with flashlight inside,
And the porchlight safely will guide
Trick-or treaters galore
To the jar by the door,
Where they take candy that they have spied.

MORAL: Have your own doorway safe and well lit so others won't fall and get hurt.

I go trick-or-treating with others,
An thank all the fathers and mothers
For the Halloween treat
That they give me to eat,
But then I must share with my brothers!

MORAL: Good manners are important on Halloween!

Halloween Games

Spooky Musical Chairs - This is played just like the regular musical chairs but instead you use spooky music. Get a cassette or CD of some spooky music and have fun!

Pin the Stem on the Pumpkin - This is played just like the children's birthday game, Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Have a large pumpkin cutout (or paint one) and make a stem. Other variations: Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin, Stick the Nose on the Witch.

Find the Ghosts - Make enough tissue paper ghosts for each child (and some extras!) and hide them around the room. To make tissue paper ghosts: take a tootsie roll lollipop and wrap tissues around it so that the top of the lollipo is the "head". Tie a piece of ribbon or yarn around it. When the kids find a ghost, they can make a face on it with black markers.

Donuts on a String - Tie donuts on a string and tack the string to the ceiling. Players will take turns and try to bite the donut keeping their hands behind their backs. Each player gets a donut to eat!
